The client, a returning customer from a previous commercial interior project, sought to expand their residence by adding a garden suite on their tree lined property. To achieve the desired two-bedroom layout while maximizing living space, we responded with a building slightly sunken below grade, optimizing the available area and creating a more expansive interior.

The Davisville Village Garden Suite marries simple, modern design with a deep connection to nature. The design is understated yet elegant, achieving a balance between functionality and warmth. The exterior features a stucco façade with windows gently filleted at their corners, offering a modern aesthetic tempered with subtle refinement. This combination creates a welcoming, clean appearance that seamlessly complements the surrounding environment.

Inside, warm wood accents add a layer of comfort throughout the suite. At the rear, a window opens to a small garden, drawing in natural light and enhancing the space’s peaceful, cozy atmosphere. Soft green elements in the garden bring an additional natural touch, aligning with the overall design philosophy.

The suite’s double-height foyer with its tall window and staircase evokes a sense of openness and ease as soon as one enters. A thoughtfully positioned window in the study area allows natural light to flood the space, promoting a calm and focused environment. The home offers a tranquil retreat, designed with both simplicity and intention in the heart of Davisville Village.

As Ontario eases regulations for Laneway and Garden Suites, we recognize the impact of earlier rules on shaping the character of local design. The Davisville Village Garden Suite is a distinctive example of how angular plane constraints influenced architectural design during a specific period in history.
