Our Davisville Village House clients envisioned a home that would provide personalized, functional spaces for each family member, including dedicated private bathrooms for the parents and each child. Extending the ground floor to accommodate a spacious family room and to create a connection to the garden was a "must-have". To allow for the additional space, the design incorporated a rear extension, a second-floor addition, and a reimagined attic. On the second floor, a new primary suite with an ensuite bathroom and walk-in closet was created through a rear expansion. The attic was transformed into a third-floor bedroom by introducing a "through" dormer, ensuring adequate ceiling height and natural light. A roof terrace, located above the second-floor addition, offers the family a private outdoor space to enjoy. At the front of the house, the previously open porch was enclosed to create a more functional entry area.
Preservation and integration were central to the approach taken throughout the project. The existing basement, main floor, and second floor of the home were retained to optimize costs. Structural modifications were implemented only where required. For example, large openings were created in the existing exterior brick walls to expand the dining and family rooms on the ground floor and the primary bedroom on the second floor. New steel beams and posts were installed, ensuring the structural integrity of the home, especially for the cantilevered rear volume. The second-floor ceiling had to be modified to accommodate the new upper-floor structure, while a new stair opening was created to provide access to the third floor.
To maintain harmony with the surrounding neighborhood, alignment of ridge line and roof slope were kept consistent with the attached neighbor’s roof, promoting cohesiveness and preserving the architectural integrity of the semi-detached homes. This approach balanced the desire for additional space with a respect for the existing structure and the neighborhood's character. Special measures were taken to protect the root system of the mature maple tree in the backyard during the construction of the rear addition.
